Hi Mark, Doc here. It sounds like you are in the right place in your proposal to remove the square top Hitachi carbs for the earlier SU Style Hitachi's. Yes all the plumbing can be cleaned up to be the same style as the earlier 240Z used. The swap will net your Smog exempt 240Z in the same trim that the earlier '73 240's had. The car will run much better than with the later style carbs. Both derivability and mileage will increase if you have them tuned properly. You should be able to follow the tuning procedures in the Datsun/ Nissan Service Manual. Remember the sequence!

E-mail Paul Vancas at Pvancas@aol.com. He is the ZONC Club Historian and can be called at: 925-371-4495. Paul has a set of the earlier carbs in the latest ZONC Newsletter, and at a reasonable price too! I hope that this helps you in your project with your son...........

RE: Carburetor Advice

Dear Doc,
My name is Mark Davey. I am a ZONC member. My son & I are restoring a 1973 240Z. The engine and tranny are back in the car and the next big project to figure out is the carburetors. I could really use you help/advice. I would like to get rid of all the coolant plumbing associated with the 73 SU's. Can I use the 73 intake manifold with pre 73 SU carb's and plug the coolant
holes? If this will work do you know of someone who has a set of 72 or earlier Z SU carbs rebuilt and how much will this cost? Are you available in the evenings, I get home around 6:30 to 7:00 pm weekdays? Ideally it would be great to install triple Webers but they are just so very expensive.

 Many thanks,

 Mark Davey
