Subject: 83 ZX GL na
Doc,
I picked your email of the ZX forum page. You seem to be one
of the few who
give reasonable answers and don't try to reply just to hear
yourself talk. Also
sounds to me like you have a lot of Z experience, so I hope
you can help me out
a little.
I am fairly competent as a shadetree kind of guy, and have
a decent set of tools.
But I am having some problems with diagnosis and interpreting
the shop
manual as well (83 Nissan). I have used several GM manuals
and even later Z
manuals but for some reason they seem much simpler to follow
than this one.
Anyway, I am not sure if I have what the manual refers to as
a EFI or ECCS
engine, so not sure which set of materials to use. I do not
find a page to
determine what I have, other than 'component parts' pages.
The ECCS page
shows a turbo as a component, which I do not have, but it does
show a EGR
valve (EFI page does not) which I do have. In addition, the
ECCS page shows a
power transistor. Any thoughts on this?
But the real problem. I changed the oil today and now the car
won't start! Wow!
Actually, it is acting like it is flooded. I see spark by pulling
a wire and holding
it close to jump, plugs are wet with fuel and pump is running.
Where do I start?
Would a failed TPS in full position cause flooding? Can I disconnect
and start
without it? I have heard of failed coolant sensors causing
the ECU to think it
was cold and needed enrichment to start? If I disconnect that,
will the ECU set
some defaults link a GM and allow the vehicle to run, albeit
poorly?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Bill, Doc here,
I believe that you have inadvertently caused the cylinder head
temp sender to either be disconnected or that there is too
much resistance in
the circuit. The sensor is located on the passengers' side
of the engine in the
lower part of the cylinder head to the rear of the dipstick.
It is a two wire EFI
type connector that must be NOT GREEN!! Remove the wire clip
taking care
not to loose it and then remove the harness side and inspect
for corrosion. On
a ZX Turbo that is at my shop I found that someone previously
had broken off
one of the wires from the connector and then just stuffed it
in there and taped
it, hoping that it would be OK. BIG Mistake!! The car Will
Not Start if there is
no cylinder head temp sensor, or the circuit has too much resistance!
Go there
First!! Then report back to me.
Next, the ECCS is on the Turbo models, you have the system
described as the
EFI Type. Your system does not have the power transistor.
I hope that this can shed some light on your particular problem!
